This document refers to the new law on local elections, adopted by the Romanian Parliament in May 2015. It explains why the main element of the law - electing mayors in one round, through a first-past-the-post electoral system - is not appropriate for the Romanian context and makes several proposals, such as eliminating the electoral threshold for local and county councils, electing local and county councils through open party lists, or lowering the number of signatures from locals that a party needs in order to stand in the elections.
